Philips, Francis Charles My Varied Life London Eveleigh Nash 1914 1st Edition Hardcover G+/NONE; Bound in orignal blue cloth with title in gilt, somewhat sun-faded on spine and worn at top and bottom of spine; pagination in chapter 3 is out of sequence and seems to be missing a few pages Philips (1849-1921) was an English novelists, dramatist, and barrister. His autobiography is a great read - he know a great many of the major personalities during the last 30 years of Victoria's reign and of the ten years following. He attended Sandhurst and spent several years in the army. When he was in his early 20's he resigned his commission and became involved with the theater, writing and producing plays. After several years, his interest in the theater waned and he entered the Middle Temple and joined the Bar in 1884. He had enough money to do what he wanted to do and seemed to just have followed his fancy. His comments about quite a few 'prominent Victorians' are sharp and to the point. Great reading even if a few pages are missing. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 335 pp Price:
