William Elliot Griffis (1843-1928) was an educator, clergyman and author. Born in PA, he was educated at Rutgers University and in 1870 was sent to Japan to teach natural science. He taught chemistry and physics at what is now the Imperial University until 1874, when he returned to the United States.
This is his first book and is an invaluable source of information about Japan during the second half of the the 19th century. It is illustrated with numerous b&w drawings and etchings and was so popular that it went through 12 editions.
